Black women, hair relaxers and breast cancer

May
17

Chemical relaxers used to straighten hair are not associated with an increased risk of developing breast cancer among African-American women, according to a study in the May issue of “Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention”:http://clincancerres.aacrjournals.org/

Researchers followed 48,167 black women participating in a study of black women’s health.

They found no increase in breast cancer risk due to the type of hair relaxer used or the frequency and duration of use. Women who used relaxers seven or more times a year over a 20 year span or longer had the same risk as women who used the chemicals for less than a year, according to researchers from “Boston University”:http://www.bu.edu and “Howard University Cancer Center”:http://www.med.howard.edu/hucc/

Any impact on the brain? on children, sitting, waiting on their mothers while in beauty shops? on groundwater?

I am a 60 year old African-American woman who has worn locks for fifteen years. Primarily to save money knowing my three stair-step children would soon enter college. With the passing of years I have increasingly wondered what impact solutions used to straighten have on children and the environment.

    Thank you.
