The number of patients on the U.S. waiting list for organ transplants has grown steadily over the years with more than 97,000 people in need of new organs like eyes, kidneys, livers and hearts as of Dec. 31, 2007, according to the United Network for Organ Sharing or UNOS.
In 2007, nearly 6,000 people died while waiting for an organ. Most of the people — about 75,000 — on the list are waiting for kidney donations, according to UNOS.
Several groups including Donate Life America and Allsup, which represents people on disability insurance, are trying to raise awareness about the growing need for organ donation this month.
Free posters are available for hospitals, clinic and other community groups to help get the message out. For more information on how to become a registered donor, go to www.donatelife.net. To get a free poster for Donate Life Month call Karen Hercules-Doerr at 800-854-1418, ext. 5770.
