The Rockland Department of Health has won an award for a program it runs to help children with severe asthma. The Steps to Better Breathing Program, developed in 2004, uses a three-session, home-based approach to educate families about the disease. The program has helped over 100 children with asthma and their families learn how to manage asthma and minimize exposure to asthma triggers. The program helped families to create an Asthma Action Plan to prevent asthma attacks. Families reported significant reduction in inhaler use, sleep disruption, and activity limitation. The county will receive a 2008 Achievement Award from the National Association of Counties at the group’s conference in Kansas City, Mo., on July 13.
