When kids leave home for summer camp, parents expect their children might get a sunburn, perhaps mosquito bites or a case of poison ivy. But not a serious gastrointestinal virus. Apparently that’s what’s happening at sleep-away camps throughout the state, according to the “Department of Health”:http://www.health.state.ny.us/press/releases/2008/2008-08-07_advisory_to_camps_after_outbreaks.htm.
State officials have issued a health advisory to all overnight camp directors, camp medical staff, camp emergency medical services and camp infirmary services alerting them to the outbreaks, and giving them steps to take to prevent the spread of GI illness at camp.
Those steps include:
• Washing hands thoroughly after using the bathroom and before preparing and eating food.
• Children who experience nausea, vomiting or diarrhea should not attend camp. If youngsters become ill while at camp, they should not participate in activities with well campers, should not go swimming, and should not handle food for others, until the symptoms are gone for at least 72 hours.
