The rate of abortion in the United States is at its lowest level since 1974, having declined 33 percent from a peak of 29 abortions per 1,000 women aged 15–44 in 1980 to 20 per 1,000 in 2004, according to a new report by the “Guttmacher Institute”:http://www.guttmacher.org/pubs/2008/09/18/Report_Trends_Women_Obtaining_Abortions.pdf.
Although abortion rates have declined among all racial and ethnic groups, large disparities persist, with Hispanic and black women obtaining abortions at rates three and five times higher than non-Hispanic white women, the report says.
