Garrison-based Hastings Center President Tom Murray will be a featured guest on NPR’s Science Friday tomorrow, October 10, at 2:30 pm. From stem cells to health care reform to emerging technologies, the next president faces a host of bioethical challenges. Dr. Murray and Science Friday host Ira Flatow will talk about these, and the role of science and technology in the next administration and Congress. You can listen live on your local NPR affiliate, or live online. The interview will also be available as a free podcast shortly after the program.
Likely topics of the discussion include the candidates’ stated positions on issues in science and medicine—such as stem cell research, patents, personalized medicine, and pandemic and disaster planning—as well as other topics that the next administration is likely to confront, such as DNA banking and forensics, enhancement, nanotechnology, and synthetic biology. Dr. Murray was a member of a group convened by the Center for the Study of the Presidency, a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization in Washington, which last month issued a report to the presidential candidates on how to strengthen the role of science and technology in the White House and Congress. The report calls for the appointment of an Assistant to the President for Science and Technology and the establishment of a Congressional Office of Science and Technology.
