More than 15 percent of the U.S. population receives health insurance through Medicaid, the federal-state benefit program for the poor. In 2009, the program grew 8.8 percent nationally, according to a report Thursday by the Kaiser Family Foundation.
The recession has forced many Westchester, Rockland and Putnam county residents into the program as well.
