Autism advocates outraged over radio host’s comments

Radio show host Michael Savage has made parents and advocates of autistic children very angry. On his July 16th radio show, he said autism was”a racket” and “a fraud” and that ” in 99 percent of the cases, its a brat who hasn’t been told to cut the act out.”

Expired food in Westchester stores

Westchester County has issued fines totaling more than $85,000 to 33 local food stores for failing to remove expired items from the shelves.

The Department of Consumer Protection acted following recent inspections of 63 food stores. While overall, Westchester stores did better than in a 2007 investigation, the latest check finds the problem still persists.

Free rabies vaccine for Putnam pets

Residents are invited to bring their cats, dogs and ferrets to a free Rabies Vaccination Clinic at the Animal Hospital of Kent, 1242 Route 52, Carmel on July 19, from 2 to 4 p.m. Participants must bring proof of Putnam County residency and proof of prior rabies vaccination, tags are not acceptable.

Free HIV testing throughout Westchester

The Westchester County Department of Health is offering free HIV testing as part of the National Association of People with AIDS 14th Annual National HIV Testing Day on Friday.

I’m probably going to live until I’m 95 years old, according to the online life expectancy calculator developed by researchers at the University of Pennsylvania.

Shopping for a nursing home? Check the ratings.

With more hospital and doctor surveys out there than before, seems like its only natural for nursing homes to get rated too.

Today, the Bush administration announced that it will be evaluating the country’s nursing homes by the end of the year, using a star rating system (yes, just like hotels).

Smoking in Hulk movie spurs criticism from medical group

Hollywood promised to go smoke-free a year ago, but in “The Incredible Hulk” movie the character Gen. Thunderbolt Ross, played by William Hurt, is rarely on screen without a cigar in hand.

Seems like anti-smoking advocates, the American Medical Association and New York’s Commissioner of Health all gave the movie, which opened Friday, a thumbs down.
